Even before Shawnee Martinez took her first swing for the Enochs High golf team, her reputation had spread throughout the Stanislaus District.

Martinez had won the girls title at the 56th Bumgardner Junior Memorial Tournament in July, shooting a 1-over 73 the second day of the 36-hole event at Del Rio Country Club.

If there was a question whether she could carry that success into her freshman season, it's no longer being asked.

Martinez ended her regular season with a flurry, finishing third at the Sierra Invitational on Wednesday and shooting an even-par 37 Thursday to lead the Eagles past Downey 261-363 in their Modesto Metro Conference finale.

"Coming in as a freshman, my expectations were to shoot par or better, knowing that is what it's going to take for me to make it to NorCal or state," said Martinez, whose career low for an 18-hole event is a 2-under 72.

Her low nine-hole score is a 3-under 34, while Martinez shot an 82 at par-72 Manteca Park on Wednesday in her first 18-hole event this fall. She'll play 18 holes Monday in the MMC Tournament at Creekside Golf Course.

Her performance shouldn't be a surprise considering her pedigree.

Shawnee is the younger sister of Marina Martinez, The Bee's two-time Player of the Year and the NorCal High School champion in 2006. The elder Martinez fired a 3-under 69 at the Yolo Fliers Golf Club, a performance that still ranks among the most impressive in the NorCal tournament's history.

"My sister's success motivates me to be as good as her, if not better," the younger Martinez said. "I don't know what people are saying, but I'm pretty sure they are comparing our game. My sister's biggest advantage is her distance. The common thread is the support and love we have for each other."

That was apparent when the siblings competed in the Oakdale Junior Tournament, and Shawnee won the overall trophy: "(Marina) congratulated me and told me she was proud of me," Martinez said.

Regardless of how deep into the postseason Martinez goes -- there are five postseason tournaments in all, culling golfers each week -- she won't be putting down her clubs.

"What keeps me working hard throughout the year is my love for the game and knowing that this isn't a game you can put own for three months and expect to come back strong," Martinez said.

JOHANSEN 258, DAVIS 296 -- The Vikings tied with Beyer for the MMC title. The teams will compete in the MMC Tournament at Creekside GC on Monday. Christine Uhalde made all pars except for birdies on holes 7 and 8 to finish with a 2-under 34 at Modesto Muni on Thursday.
