Vince Escamilla: Tuesday's Notebook

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it; does it make a sound? I have often pondered the answer to this philosophical question. I don’t know about the forest but I found out that if a tree falls on your car right outside your house, you hear it loud and clear. That has absolutely to do with high school sports but felt the need to share and with sharing in mind I’m going to segue into some volleyball. Here is a recap of various high school sports local newspapers have reported on this last week.

Set, Point, Match

Atwater has a chance to be co-champions with Golden Valley of the Central California Conference if they can just win one more game with three remaining on their schedule.

Ace In The Hole

The Lodi High School golf team won the SJS Division I South Championship…Johansen’s Christine Uhalde, who will sign with Fresno State on a golf scholarship, finished first in the DI South Championship with a 2-over par 74…Uhalde along with St. Mary’s Layney Silva (77), Enochs’ Shawnee Martinez (80), Lodi’s Marissa Hinchman (82), Tracy West’s Alice Trisri (90) and Belinda Mahan (93), and Jennifer Kim (91) of Turlock High all will compete in the Section Masters Championship…DI South teams that will move on to the SMC are East Union, Enochs, Lodi, and Merced, who receive their first playoff berth since head coach Scott Winter begun his Merced career six-years ago. Merced finished 5th in team standings…The St. Francis Troubadours ran away with the SJS Division I North Championship...Modesto’s Summer Uhrik (93), Will C. Wood’s Jennifer Yatabe, St. Mary’s Stephannie Hammell (92) and winner of first place in the DI North Championship Nicole Cruz will all move on to the Section Masters Championship.

Corner Kick

Merced controls their own destiny as they have two games left to Golden Valley’s one to claim a CCC Championship. Both teams have at least clinched a playoff spot.

Lancer dealing at Pan Am Championship

Freshman Jordan Kron of East union pitched four shutout innings to Brazil as he and the 14 and under USA team earned a berth in the final of the PanAM  Championship in Ecuador. The USA team will await Puerto Rico or Venezuela in the finals. Kron gave up two hits.

Passionate Quote of the Week

Atwater setter, Marissa Guardado said, "My position is to stay strong. If I panic, they're going to panic. If I've got a frown on my face, they're going to have frowns on their face," Guardado said. "I needed to be a leader."

Candid Quote of the Week

Merced soccer coach Bart McAfee said, "We have to score. I'm putting that on our offensive players. I can't go out there," McAfee said. "They need to put it in the goal. We haven't all year. "We'll see. We better. If we don't, we're done."

That’s what I’m talking about!

After my Coaches Way blog it’s good to see that some coaches wear their emotions on their sleeve. "I think she's the No. 1 setter in our league, in my eyes," Atwater assistant coach Sonny Masaniai said. "She can read plays, she anticipates and her reflexes... Any time a ball is hit to her, she reacts."
